SabreCON Build 3

SabreCON 3 is our third build with Sartell-St. Stephen High School in Sartell. Students at the high school built the upper portion of the house during the 2023-24 school year. This partnership with Habitat helps students prepare for promising careers in the trades. High school students gain experience framing, installing siding, roofing, trim, and cabinetry. College students complete the plumbing and electrical work. As a result, 50+ students exit the program ready to start their careers each year.

Hellen (pictured farthest on the left) was born in South Sudan and early on moved to Uganda with her parents, for safety reasons. Education for girls was not a given in Uganda, but an uncle convinced her parents to send her to school. This began Hellen’s lifelong quest for education and the desire to use her knowledge to assist others.

In South Sudan, Hellen obtained multiple higher education degrees and served as Under-Secretary of Labor and director of General Labor. In 2013 she founded Mama Hellen’s schools, “where quality education is provided to marginalized children and they are taught that if they want change, they need to be part of the change.” The school has helped 250 children and continues to grow with supporters in both South Sudan and Saint Cloud, Minnesota.

In 2017 Hellen moved to the Unites States to escape violence in South Sudan and to be closer to her family who had resettled in Saint Cloud. She immediately immersed herself in the community, with many connections in Saint Cloud and serving as a member of the Civil Services Committee. She spends much of her time volunteering, including being part of a community garden, assisting with community meals, and spending time in local schools and faith communities. She is completing her master’s degree in Educational Administration and Leadership at SCSU.

Hellen currently lives with her nephew and his family. She is excited to be partnering with Habitat where she will be able to own a cost-effective home and learn skills as she helps build her home. She is looking forward to a home where she can hold social gatherings, welcome her community, rest, and continue working on her life goal of “leaving a good legacy.”
