As of June 26, 2024, partner homebuyers Maow and Shamso have officially purchased their home.
SabreCON 2 was our second build with Sartell-St. Stephen High School in Sartell. Students at the high school built the upper portion of the house during the 2022-23 school year. This partnership with Habitat helps students prepare for promising careers in the trades. High school students gain experience framing, installing siding, roofing, trim, and cabinetry. College students complete the plumbing and electrical work. As a result, 50+ students exit the program ready to start their careers each year.
Maow and Shamso’s favorite thing about Central MN is the landscape, being able to enjoy lakes and forests all so close to home. They also enjoy visiting the Minnesota State Fair.
Maow grew up with a very challenging life, living in a refugee camp for more than 20 years. He met and married Shamso in Kenya, and the chance to resettle to another country became available. They feel lucky they were selected to resettle to the United States.
They arrived in Denver, Colorado with their two eldest children where they lived for a year.
In 2013 they moved to St. Cloud. They learned about Habitat for Humanity through a neighbor and are excited to be working towards home ownership.
Maow works at FDC as a production coordinator of data entry and enjoys when he gets to drive the forklift. He would like to go back to school and further his education with a college degree. Shamso has previously worked in home care and currently works at Crossroads Mall.
They previously rented the apartment where they lived with their six boys (ages 5-17). The boys like to play sports, especially basketball and soccer and hope to have a basketball hoop of their own. The family is looking forward to having more space and a yard to spend time in.
